New Resource congratulates the California Film Institute (CFI) on winning the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce’s Green Business of the Year Award. The green business-certified CFI, a New Resource client, presents the annual Mill Valley Film Festival, exhibits films at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center, and offers free educational programs to students. The award comes on the heels of the opening of A Fierce Green Fire, a documentary about the environmental movement, at the film center and a sell-out two-day Environmental Youth Conference featuring environmentally focused films and representatives from local nonprofit groups.

CFI’s green initiatives include facilities-focused efforts, such as onsite recycling and participation  in PG&E’s ClimateSmart™ program; the Active Cinema Program, which invites filmmakers to work with the community to solve problems; and partnerships with local organizations to engage constituents in green activities.

The Institute’s newest environmental goal: becoming the country’s first solar-powered nonprofit theater.
