I was completely moved at last night’s re:think event featuring Give Something Back (GSB) founder Mike Hannigan. Mike started GSB 20 years ago, with the idea of giving all of their profits away. What kind of crazy person….
Well, this year GSB is celebrating their 20th year in business and have donated over $5 million dollars to local nonprofits.
But Mike and his team at GSB aren’t resting. They’ve begun to look at their assets as tools to further help the community. An example?
Mike has leveraged his buying power (and unconventional thinking) to significantly reduce the cost of backpacks that smaller organizations provide to underprivileged children in the Bay Area. With the cost reduced, these organizations were able to buy five times as many backpacks!
That demand overwhelmed the existing production capacity. So how do you assemble 160,000 backpacks? Mike utilized his network to reach out to the Department of Corrections, and now inmates at Folsom prison are taking on this huge task.
Amazing outside-the-box thinking delivers real results for the community!
What assets does your business have that can help make a difference? Mike challenges you to put some thought into it and take action.
