Meet your bankers: Jonathan O'Dell
June 6, 2014
Next up in our occasional series of “meet your bankers” interviews: Jonathan O’Dell, a commercial relationship manager who joined the bank in 2011.
What he does: Jonathan helps clients assess their loan needs, assists both bank colleagues and the client throughout the loan process, and continues to work with the client after the loan closes.
What he likes about it: “I get to work with a lot of different people in different industries,” says Jonathan. “And because of our green focus, the clients often have a much more interesting mindset than the average entrepreneur.”
How it all started: After earning a degree in business administration from San Jose State University, Jonathan taught middle school math. When his school district suffered budget cuts, he switched to banking and became a credit analyst. He came to New Resource after hearing about an opening through a banking colleague. “I liked that New Resource approaches things differently,” he says. “The focus is not just on who needs money, but also on who’s actually going to do good with the money.”
Sustainability challenge: Last fall, Jonathan set a tough target as part of the bank’s annual sustainability challenge: he decided to make his work paperless as possible. Because he liked marking up reports and financials with a pen, he brought an old tablet computer from home that allowed him to use a digital pen to mark up documents digitally. He asked the IT department to install a few extra pieces of software that allowed him to digitally edit and share more documents. And now he can even submit his expense reports—including receipts—digitally. “Sometimes a client needs to physically sign something, and then we need paper,” says Jonathan. “But most of the time, there’s no need for me to print something out.”
Life outside the bank: When he’s not at the bank, Jonathan spends time with his family, including his two-year-old daughter. He also likes watching comedies like “Hot Fuzz,” “The Heat” and reruns of “Seinfeld.”
His passions: Whenever time allows, Jonathan goes geocaching, an ongoing treasure hunt played by people around the world using the Internet and GPS devices. “My daughter loves doing it with me, and it’s really fun,” he says. “You explore places you might never have seen before.”
